Sidara Voices & Visions

A Conversation with Lara Karim, Sidara’s Head of Innovation

Innovation begins with bold ideas—but it thrives through collaboration, curiosity, and a willingness to reimagine what’s possible. In this first edition of our Voices & Visions, we sit down with Lara Karim, Head of Innovation at Sidara, to explore how creativity can drive lasting impact.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey to becoming the Head of Innovation?

"I am an Architect at heart and a Design Manager in practice. After 22 years of experience in Design and Design Management, I realized that design and art are essential components of innovation. Combining the two allows for a deeper understanding of the world around us and sets new horizons for creativity and ground-breaking innovation to make a real impact in the world."

"Chairing the Innovation Council for Sidara, my focus is to build a culture of collaborative innovation to provide innovative solutions for our clients and upcoming pioneering practices for future opportunities."

"I am a firm believer in what I like to call 'the collective genius'; through diversity of thought, people amplify rather than minimize their differences to reach a creative resolution, thus becoming social architects and change agents—the secret sauce for a successful innovation practice.”

To innovate is to adapt, learn, and evolve, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and progress.

How do you define innovation, and why is it important for our business?

“Innovation in our industry means rethinking how we design, build, and operate the built environment—not just by adopting new technologies, but by making meaningful, lasting improvements. Whether it’s adaptive reuse to extend the life of existing structures, AI in healthcare to improve patient care, or sustainable aviation strategies to reduce carbon emissions, innovation touches every facet of what we do. When teams challenge traditional design and construction approaches and embrace new methodologies, they increase efficiency, reduce waste, and better serve client needs. This innovative mindset drives productivity, strengthens project teams, and creates resilient building solutions that meet both current demands and future sustainability goals."

"When we question 'business as usual' and actively look for improvements, we stay ahead of changes, meet what people really need, and move forward. This mindset energizes teams, builds stronger workplaces, and creates lasting success.”

How do you see innovation shaping the future of our industry?

"Innovation is no longer a nice-to-have in our industry—it’s become absolutely essential. As the challenges we face grow more complex, from climate change to rapid urbanization, innovation is what allows us to respond with agility, creativity, and purpose. We’re seeing a shift from isolated improvements to more holistic thinking—rethinking how we design, build, and operate in ways that are sustainable, adaptive, and deeply human-centered. It’s about integrating disciplines, embracing new delivery models, and creating solutions that work not just for today, but for generations to come."

"But you know what? The technology is just a tool. The real magic happens with people. Innovation thrives when we bring diverse voices to the table.... when we create spaces where different perspectives can challenge our assumptions and help us imagine something better together."

How do you foster a culture of innovation within your team?

"The most powerful innovations often come from unexpected places. I've found that when team members feel truly safe to share their ideas—even the ones that seem impractical at first—that's when breakthrough thinking happens. Some of our most successful initiatives started as seemingly impossible concepts that we refined through collaborative discussion. Creating an environment where people know their voice matters doesn't just improve our work—it transforms how we approach challenges altogether."

The Endeavor Program

As Head of Innovation at Sidara, Lara Karim spearheaded The Endeavor Program—an initiative designed to spark transformative thinking across the company. More than a program, it’s a mindset shift that encourages teams to break from convention and explore bold ideas in design, technology, and impact.

From AI-powered solutions to sustainable supply chains, Lara’s vision is already driving breakthrough projects. In this Q&A, she shares the campaign’s purpose, early outcomes, and why fostering a culture of innovation is essential to creating lasting value.

"This work goes beyond incremental improvements. We're tackling complex challenges like reducing our environmental impact while increasing efficiency and developing solutions that scale across markets. The campaign provides the framework and resources for these ambitious goals, empowering every employee to contribute ideas and drive meaningful change. By fostering this innovative mindset, we're positioning ourselves to lead in emerging technologies and markets while creating lasting value for our stakeholders, clients, and communities."

"When I think about innovation and the Endeavor Program, I see it as this beautiful team effort. It happens when we collaborate, when we're willing to step outside our comfort zones and say, 'What if we tried this instead?' Those moments plant the seeds for real transformation. At the end of the day, this isn't just the organization's bottom line – it's about creating something better for all of us: our companies, our people, our clients, and the communities where we live and work."

" I want everyone to feel empowered to contribute because every idea helps us create something truly impactful."
