How would you rate the built environment’s current level of technology adoption?
"It really depends on the sector – some are making huge progress, others less so. For instance, I’ve seen airports that use tech to streamline passenger flow and operations, while others still rely on outdated systems, which can really impact the experience.
Overall, the built environment tends to be a late adopter, often waiting until a technology is fully proven and mature. But in the long run this is going to cost them time and money, and potentially customers so it’s important to get it right."

How critical is digital advancement in tackling challenges like climate change?
"Digital tools are absolutely essential. Above all else, they help us measure and understand the actual problem we’re looking to solve. Strange as it sounds, without data we can never truly be sure how an office building or a hospital is performing when it comes to operating as a resilient, healthy, efficient space as the climate changes. This is where IoT sensors, digital models and condition assessments come in. Once we have proper insights, we can simulate different solutions using AI or digital twins, testing them safely in a virtual environment, before we move to implementation. It’s a full-circle process where digital supports every step, helping us respond to complex challenges like climate change with more confidence."
How is AI reshaping the AEC sector?
"AI’s real power lies in its ability to process massive amounts of data at incredible speed. That opens up a wide range of applications, from generative design and predictive maintenance to improving safety on construction sites.
It’s especially valuable in the early stages of a project, where understanding the context quickly can shape better outcomes. We’re seeing AI become a foundational tool across the asset lifecycle, helping teams make smarter, faster decisions that would be hard to achieve manually. Once the industry wakes up and starts scaling AI effectively, it's going to look very different from today."

What practical steps should clients take to get real value from AI?
"There’s a lot of hype out there. So, one thing I always advise clients to do is to start with a clear set of business goals. Then look at the data you have or need to get there. Too often, people rush into AI without a clear purpose, and that’s why so many models never make it into production. Focus on solving real problems, not just implementing AI for the sake of it. When done right, AI can deliver real, measurable value, but it starts with clarity and intent."
Beyond AI, which digital trends excite you most for the built environment?
"There are always lots of new ideas out there and not all of them make it. Often, it’s the technologies with the most hype that prove least successful. However, quantum computing stands out to me. It’s already showing promise in areas like logistics and optimization, thanks to its ability to greatly reduce computational time and achieve solutions that couldn’t be achieved with existing methods. Another is shape-shifting materials that transforms how infrastructure physically responds to its environment. Imagine buildings that adapt in real time to improve performance and transform infrastructure from passive elements to active ones. These aren’t just futuristic ideas, they’re things we’re actively exploring with clients."


How is digital transformation connecting architecture, engineering, and consulting at Sidara?
"Technological advancement is absolutely front and center of what we do. For us, digital transformation is business transformation powered by technology.
It starts with digitizing data – ensuring your data artifacts are digital and ready for AI. Then we move into digitalization, leveraging our domain knowledge to automate and streamline workflows. Now, we’re focusing on transformation – changing how we deliver value to clients. By having a digital-forward view, we are able to create a digital thread that runs through the entire asset lifecycle, improving collaboration and continuity from planning to operations."

What advice would you give to those starting their careers in the built environment?
"Be a lifelong learner. Technology is evolving fast, and the challenges we face are only getting more complex. Don’t be afraid to question how things have always been done.
Also, take pride in the impact of your work. For example, we’re leading the design of the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge in the Philippines. It’ll cut travel time from five hours to under 45 minutes. That’s a massive improvement for the region, and it’s the kind of legacy you can be proud of. It’s not about the tech, it’s about the impact you want to make on the world – let that sense of purpose guide you."
