Using innovative thinking to help those in the greatest need

In Los Angeles, homelessness has become a critical problem. Such is the scale of the challenge that it’s estimated as many as 75,000 people experienced homelessness across the county in 2023.

Following the success of the Olympics in Paris, the torch now passes to Los Angeles, with the city gearing up to host the games in 2028.

However, with the eyes of the world soon to be on LA, the International Olympic Committee have made tackling the growing problem of homelessness a condition of the city hosting the forthcoming games.

In response, Perkins&Will’s Innovation Incubator team have taken action. Part of the city's A Bridge Home initiative, they have created a genuinely groundbreaking design to help those experiencing the greatest need. DOME is a modular sleeping unit specifically designed for interim and emergency shelters with a laser focus on dignity and sophistication – qualities often missing in traditional shelters across the US.

Truly thoughtful innovation
Manufactured by Shield, DOME units are made using readily available, quality materials, costing less than $5,000 – an astoundingly low figure given the impact they can have.

Each offers a lockable wardrobe and a frame for a twin bed. Also provided are an electrical outlet, USB port, a canvas tarp for privacy, and an optional animal kennel – meaning residents can continue living with their pets.

The innovative design offers a genuine sense of dignity. For couples or families, DOME is flexible enough that multiple units can be combined to create even larger living spaces.

A tailored approach
With homelessness such a widespread problem, the durable structure means they can be collapsed, stored and transported anywhere.

Shelters differ hugely in terms of space, layout and size, so a one-size-fits all approach does not work. DOME’s modular design is fully adaptable, meaning each pod can be reconfigured and stacked with ease, ensuring that they can be used in shelters of any size or scale.

Whatever the context and wherever the facility, the units consistently provide a comfortable and safe place for those who need them.

Design for a better quality of life
DOME units have the potential to revolutionize the way homelessness is tackled by providing affordable and functional housing. Their design epitomizes privacy, security and comfort, while their potential for reuse means they can help alleviate the crisis in hand and whenever need exists in the future.

The design is already having a positive impact

King Solomon Village is an interim housing facility in Los Angeles and is hosting the units as part of its offering to residents. Completed in summer 2022, it has 100 installations, improving the shelter experience for those experiencing a challenging time.

This is a shining example of exactly how innovative design can improve lives and create a better home for all.
