At COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Sidara will present a bold vision for the future of the built environment – one that responds to the converging pressures of climate change and demographic transformation.

With the number of people aged 60 and over expected to almost double between now and 2050, new buildings and systems will be essential to protect living standards and ensure a good quality of life. Yet the scale of construction needed to achieve this presents a major challenge. Now more than ever, we must urgently rethink how we design, build, and operate the infrastructure that will support an ageing population, without compromising our climate goals.

As a leading sponsor of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) pavilion, experts from Sidara companies — Dar, Perkins&Will, TYLin, and Currie & Brown — will host discussions on how design and project management can shape a society that is both sustainable and inclusive.

A key focus this year will be the challenge many regions face in building the necessary healthcare and transportation infrastructure to support older adults — without triggering a surge in embodied and operational carbon. From constructing net-zero healthcare facilities and electrifying mobility to retrofitting existing assets, Sidara will showcase integrated strategies that enable inclusive, low-carbon development.

“We must design for the future we know is coming. That means creating spaces and systems that support ageing populations while radically reducing carbon. COP30 is our opportunity to lead this change and demonstrate how thoughtful design can defuse the demographic timebomb without accelerating the climate crisis.”

“Sidara companies have been designing places and spaces to improve the quality of life that also have minimal impact on the environment for decades. Now is the time for us all to scale these ideas to make sure a changing society doesn’t mean a planet forever scarred by climate change.” — Adam Mactavish, Chair of Sidara’s Sustainability Council and Currie & Brown Sustainability Director

Sidara’s presence at COP30 marks the fourth consecutive year of support for the UN’s COP program and reflects our commitment to full lifecycle decarbonization and inclusive design.
