In southeast Australia, home to some of the country’s most strategically important oil and gas infrastructure, a network of onshore and offshore assets has operated for more than 55 years, supporting national energy security and fueling household and industrial demand. As these assets aged, maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient production required a comprehensive modernization program that could extend life, enhance performance, and prepare facilities for continued operation in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

To meet these challenges, a major operator selected Wood in 2004 to provide long‑term Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) services across its asset base. Following a five‑year renewal in 2024, Wood has now partnered with the operator for over 20 years, delivering sustained modernization across more than 20 offshore and onshore facilities.

Providing fully integrated EPC services

Across two decades, Wood’s role has expanded into a Retrofitting EPC framework covering a wide range of minor modifications and major enhancement scopes. These include upgrades and brownfield modifications across offshore platforms, coastal gas terminals, and onshore processing plants.

A dedicated on‑site team supported by Wood’s Melbourne office provides fully integrated EPC services that ensure each modification is aligned with operational needs, safety standards, and lifecycle extension objectives.

Wood delivers brownfield projects across the entire EPC lifecycle, including concept and feasibility assessments, FEED and detailed engineering, construction management and execution, commissioning and close‑out support, and field‑managed maintenance engineering.

This continuity ensures that every project begins with the end in mind, balancing constructability, safety, operational efficiency, and long‑term asset integrity.

Typical offshore scopes include platform preparation for drilling rig movements, new flowline installations, well workover support, facility enhancements and upgrades, decommissioning support, and engineering for field‑managed maintenance.

These modifications improve reliability and operational readiness while reducing downtime during maintenance and drilling operations.

Onshore works include cooler condenser upgrades and replacements, compression system enhancements, gas plant‑wide electrical and instrument system upgrades, replacement of package equipment, and high‑capacity firewater tank and pump system upgrades.

Collectively, these upgrades strengthen plant resilience, safety, and operational efficiency, which are key factors in extending asset life.

Ensuring safety and enhancing asset performance

The Retrofit contract is delivered by highly skilled, multi‑disciplinary teams that integrate engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning capabilities, driving efficiency and consistency across all assets.

Wood draws on a global network of 35,000+ specialists, including subject‑matter experts across engineering and operations. These global capabilities are applied locally to solve complex challenges across Australia’s diverse onshore and offshore environments.

Safety leadership is central to Wood’s delivery model. The operator awarded Wood Safety Recognition Awards in 2014, 2015, and 2016 in acknowledgment of their consistent safety performance and culture of proactive observation and risk management.

Over 20 years, Wood’s modifications have enabled extended operational life for critical Australian energy assets, improved maintenance efficiency and reduced operational disruptions, enhanced production performance and platform reliability, modernized safety systems and regulatory compliance across facilities and continued national energy security through long‑lived, high‑performing infrastructure.

The enduring partnership between Wood and the operator demonstrates how integrated EPC delivery, anchored in safety, technical excellence, and deep asset knowledge, can future‑proof essential energy assets for decades to come.
