Project Polaris is a landmark national development in Grenada that brings together the expertise of Perkins&Will and TYLin to redefine healthcare delivery through the creation of a fully integrated medical city.
Conceived as a flagship initiative by the Government of Grenada, the project combines advanced clinical care with education, research, residential, and community-focused functions within a single, masterplanned environment. The development is anchored by a new 250-bed climate-resilient teaching hospital and forms part of a broader 84-acre site designed to support long-term healthcare transformation and economic growth.
This initiative represents a significant shift away from traditional standalone hospital models toward a more holistic, systems-based approach, where healthcare is integrated with everyday living, learning, and innovation.
At the core of Project Polaris is the ambition to position Grenada as a regional hub for medical excellence and health innovation. The masterplan organizes the development into interconnected districts that bring together healthcare, residential, mixed-use, and community infrastructure within a unified framework. A central park anchors the site, with the teaching hospital forming the primary focal point and operational core of the development.
Beyond the hospital itself, the project includes a broader mix of uses designed to support a complete ecosystem. These include research and education facilities, residential accommodation for staff and visitors, hospitality elements, and recreational amenities. Together, these components establish a layered and interconnected environment that extends the role of healthcare beyond treatment alone, supporting prevention, wellbeing, and community engagement.
The design approach for Project Polaris reflects a global shift toward integrated, patient-centered healthcare environments. Rather than functioning as an isolated institution, the development is conceived as a walkable campus where clinical care is seamlessly combined with research, education, and daily life. This model is intended to foster collaboration, attract talent, and enable continuous innovation in healthcare delivery.
The teaching hospital itself is designed to provide advanced medical services, including specialized care in areas such as oncology, cardiology, and women’s and children’s health, alongside modern diagnostics and surgical capabilities. Developed in collaboration with Mount Sinai Health System, the facility is aligned with international standards and aims to bring high-quality, specialized care closer to home for Grenadians and the wider region.
Sustainability and resilience are central to the project’s design strategy. Project Polaris is envisioned as a climate-smart development, integrating environmental considerations into both the hospital and the wider campus. The broader medical city is planned to incorporate smart infrastructure, digital integration, and resilience measures to ensure continuity of care and long-term adaptability in the face of environmental and operational challenges.
This emphasis on climate-responsive design is particularly significant given the Caribbean context, where infrastructure must respond to both environmental risks and evolving healthcare demands.
The delivery of Project Polaris reflects a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary approach involving international partners across planning, design, engineering, and healthcare consultancy. Perkins&Will has played a central role in leading the masterplanning and architectural design of the medical city and hospital, working closely with local stakeholders and international health partners to shape the project vision.
The involvement of TYLin alongside Perkins&Will aligns with the Sidara collaborative model, where specialist organizations combine expertise across sectors to deliver complex, large-scale developments. This approach enables integrated decision-making across urban design, infrastructure, and healthcare systems, ensuring that the project can respond effectively to both technical and social requirements.
Project Polaris is positioned as a transformative investment not only in healthcare infrastructure but also in the broader economic and social development of Grenada. By creating a comprehensive medical and research hub, the project aims to reduce reliance on overseas treatment, expand access to advanced care, and create new opportunities in education, employment, and medical tourism.
In the long term, the development is expected to contribute to Grenada’s ambition to become a leading medical destination within the Caribbean, supporting national resilience while attracting international expertise and investment. By integrating healthcare with community, innovation, and economic activity, Project Polaris establishes a forward-looking model for how infrastructure can support both public wellbeing and sustainable growth.
Project Polaris demonstrates how healthcare developments are evolving into complex, mixed-use environments that extend beyond clinical functions. Through its combination of advanced medical facilities, research and education spaces, residential components, and public amenities, the project creates a comprehensive ecosystem designed to support health, wellbeing, and community life.
As both a national flagship project and a regional benchmark, Project Polaris demonstrates how integrated planning and multidisciplinary collaboration can redefine healthcare infrastructure as a catalyst for broader societal transformation.
