With stretches of sandy beaches, traditional Egyptian coffee shops and souks, and scuba divers enjoying the coral reefs and incredible marine riches of the Red Sea, the city of Hurghada is one of Egypt’s most beloved beach resort destinations, attracting local and international visitors alike. The gateway to this glamourous Red Sea Riviera, the Hurghada International Airport has steadily gained greater significance as a destination for regional and global leisure flights.

To support the growth of this pivotal and ambitious airport, Dar—one of Sidara’s leading building and infrastructure specialists—designed and supervised the construction of a new three-level 91,500 m2 passenger terminal, which will expand the airport's capacity to welcome another 7.5 million visitors every year.

A terminal inspired by the Red Sea

The new terminal has a decidedly modern feel – relying on minimalist and uncluttered architecture to offer passengers a relaxing and comfortable experience. The terminal’s high-floating light ceiling emphasizes the unique locality of the airport, reflecting the nature of the surrounding terrain and echoing the world-famous sea, through its undulating underside and its slick outer profile.

Streamlining the passenger experience

Designed to facilitate operations and streamline passenger flow, the three-level terminal boasts 72 check-in counters, along with 36 passport control booths – evenly divided to serve arriving and departing passengers – as well as nine baggage claim carrousels and six outbound baggage conveyors, with a five-level security control system to ensure safety and efficiency. The terminal is carefully designed to encourage direct landside and airside interfaces between relevant functions. Elsewhere, the new terminal building incorporates the latest in airport information technology and equipment. Responding to Egypt’s climate, the terminal also incorporates specialized air conditioning and ventilation systems, as well as redundant power supply stations to boost the airport’s resilience.

A gateway to incredible experiences

With the new terminal, the Hurghada International Airport will be better positioned to welcome guests from all over the world – all seeking a destination that combines the world’s most beautiful marine heritage with the chance to explore the wonders Egypt has to offer.
